NiSIS Kick-Off Meeting
March 4-5, 2005 in Achen, Germany
On 4th and 5th of March 2005 the Kick-off Meeting of NiSIS Coordination Group on
Nature-inspired Smart Information Systems took place at the Hotel „Schweizerhof“
in Aachen, Germany. The main intention was to introduce all contractors to the general
procedures of the project and to give them an overview of the NiSIS Coordination
Group and its requirements to the Focus Groups, in order to provide a discussion
forum for the different committees to define their concrete activity plans.
NiSIS has the following Focus Groups:
- NiMOC - Nature-inspired Modelling, Optimisation and Control (Reinhard Guthke, chair)
- NiN - Nature-inspired Networks (Trevor Martin, chair)
- NiDT - Nature-inspired Database Technology (Davide Anguita, chair)
The meeting started at 13:00 with a detailed
Introduction of the Co-ordination Group given by the chairman Derek Linkens
from the University of Sheffield.
His talk was followed by a presentation on
“Nature-inspired process modelling, monitoring and design” by the chairperson
of NiMOC group, Reinhard Guthke from Hans-Knöll Institute for Natural Products Research
in Jena, Germany.
After it, the NiSIS project officer Pekka Karp from the EU in Brussels explained
the “FP7 Programme and its Planning” to give an overview of the objectives on that
side.
Then the coordinator of NiSIS, Karl Lieven, presented the
“Requirements from NiSIS project to the focus groups” giving concrete briefing
for the work during the focus group meetings in the afternoon.
The afternoon was dedicated to meetings of all NiSIS committees NiDT, NiN, NiMOC
and Technology Transfer and Education. In small groups, the participants discussed
their strategies and defined their activity plans. Furthermore, the election of
the chair and co-chair of each committee was done and other general points were
reviewed.
During a get-together dinner in the evening, the NiSIS members had the opportunity
to continue their discussions and to get to know each other better.
In the morning session on 5 March, 2005 the results of the afternoon meetings and
activity plans were presented by each committee chairperson. The concrete lists
of agreed activities with the planned budget were explained.
Furthermore, Aleksandar Jovanovic introduced a presentation on TTE in NiSIS, focusing
on partners from the industry in connection with task proposals, roadmap and he
explained the web platform with regard to the member area and its layout.
Ater this, Michael Pfaff from Biocontrol Jena GmbH gave a presentation on “The EUREKA – A European Industry-driven
Initiative Systems Biology” as an example for a project within a network
for market oriented R & D. Following this talk, Karl Bayer, University of Natural
Resources and Applied Life Sciences, Vienna introduced a task force proposal on
“Nature-inspired Monitoring and
Control”.
Closing the event, Karl Lieven announced the
“Future Activities of the Co-ordination Group” and explained the decision
and reporting procedures within the project work. He introduced the NiSIS web site
and the layout with the different templates, especially with regard to the activity
application forms.
It was agreed that all committees will send the full application form for each activity
until 31. March, 2005 to the Service Centre.
Finally, everybody was informed about the first NiSIS Symposium which will take
place form 3 – 5 October, 2005 in Albufeira, Portugal. The
Call for Paper draft was included in the handout of this meeting and everybody
is invited to send comments or updates to the Service Centre.
In total, 24 representatives from the contractors institutions attended this two
day Kick-off Meeting. In addition, two members of the Service Centre and our project
officer from the EU participated.
The meeting ended at 12:30 p.m. with a lunch buffet.
